The beautiful cathedral city of Canterbury is one of the UK’s major visitor attractions. There are excellent shopping facilities, a theatre, a cinema and many pubs and restaurants to visit. Canterbury is only 110km from London and offers a friendly, safe environment for you to spend your free time in. Pilgrims arranges a full guided tour of Canterbury for you in the first week of your course.
Canterbury offers lots to do at the weekends. The Pilgrims Activities Team will give you all the information you need about London, Canterbury and the surrounding areas. Kent offers a mixture of beautiful countryside and lovely coastal towns. There are regular buses and trains and London is within easy reach. You can hire bicycles in Canterbury or just enjoy the many shops and restaurants.

The University of Kent has excellent facilities including a sports hall, tennis courts, shops, bars, a theatre, a cinema and laundry facilities. Our international community provides a stimulating environment to share ideas and make friends with teachers from all over the world. Between July and September over 600 teachers join the Pilgrims community for Professional and Personal Development.
The FREE Resources Centre with course books, computers, journals and other materials is available to you daily. At least once during your course a major ELT bookshop will come and give an exhibition where you can buy the very latest ELT books. Pilgrims can arrange for you to join the University Library. The University bookshop has the very latest English language and grammar practice books. For £10 the University will provide an e-mail and internet log-on during your stay. Wi-Fi and computer access is available 24 hours a day.

How Pilgrims Teacher Training Courses Work:
• On the first Monday of your course, you and your group will review the course content with your trainer. As far as possible, group needs will be taken into consideration.
• You train with your group and main trainer for 3 hours each morning and 1.5 hours each afternoon, Monday to Friday. Other Pilgrims trainers may deliver some specialist sessions on your course.
• Materials will be partly customised for your group by your trainer, supplemented by published materials and by work presented by your group.
• The style of training is a mix of presentation, workshop, group/pair work and trainee-led sessions.
• Maximum class size is 18.
• You will receive an end of course certificate stating course content, topics covered and hours attended.
Course Materials
Materials will be partly tailor-made for the group by your Pilgrims trainers.
These will be supplemented by photocopies from published and primary sources
(e.g. newspapers). All materials are included in your course fees.
Your Course Certificate
· On successful completion of your Pilgrims training course, you will receive a Pilgrims certificate, stating the title, the main contents, dates and location of your course.
· Course contents will reflect the work you have done and your main trainer will be named on your certificate.
· A total of 32 clock hours per week is also included on your certificate. This meets with the requirements of most funding bodies (like Socrates).

Summer Courses at the University of Kent at Canterbury
1. Residential With Private Bathroom
Stay in a basic student bedroom in the college with a private shower and toilet. Includes bed and breakfast and a £20 meal card for lunch and dinner. This lasts for the first few days, you then add money to the card to suit your needs.

Your accommodation is in a single study bedroom. You also have your own washbasin, toilet and shower cubicle. Each bedroom has a single bed, a study desk, a chair and a wardrobe. You are supplied with bed linen and a small towel. Bedrooms are serviced daily Monday to Friday. Your room also has tea/coffee making facilities and tea/coffee supplies. We recommend that you bring you own towels.
Meals:
· Breakfast is included.
· Pilgrims gives you a meal card with £20 credit. You can use this meal card to buy lunch and dinner in one of the many campus shops, cafeterias, bars and canteens. This £20 credit will buy you lunch and dinner during your first few days at Pilgrims. You then add more money to the card using cash or your credit card.
You then choose either to:
Add more credit to your meal card by paying cash in one of the many cafeterias or shops. OR
Add more credit to your meal card using your own personal credit card at The University Hospitality office. OR
Buy your lunch and dinners with cash
You will be given full details about meal cards on your arrival. Credit left on the card is not returnable at the end of your course.

These rooms are in a two-storey house in Parkwood Village on the campus of The University of Kent. Each house has 5 or 6 bedrooms, a shower room, a bathroom, toilet and small kitchen/dining area.
Each bedroom has a single bed, study desk, chair and wardrobe. Bed linen is supplied as well as a small towel, these are changed once a week and the house is cleaned daily, Monday to Saturday. The kitchen is equipped with basic cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery. Occupants are responsible for washing their cooking utensils, and keeping the kitchen clean and tidy. We recommend that you bring your own towels.
Although the campus is safe and secure, we recommend you do not leave valuables or money in your room when you are not there.
Parkwood Village has public telephone boxes, a pub, a shop and laundry facilities. There is also a University Accommodation Office in Parkwood Village where a receptionist is on duty 9.00 – 17.00 Monday to Friday. Caretakers and security staff are on duty outside these hours.
Rutherford College - where your classes and afternoon/evening programme are held - is a pleasant 20-minute walk from Parkwood Village. Please remember to bring an umbrella.
Meals are not included with this option which is suitable for individuals or small groups of friends who prefer to cater for themselves. For course participants, morning and afternoon tea and coffee Monday to Friday are provided in Rutherford College. There are several shops and cafeterias on the University campus where you can buy snacks/lunches/dinners and food to prepare yourself.
