Who is the course suitable for?

*    Non-native secondary and adult teachers engaged in planning and/or delivering ELT programmes
*    Non-native teachers of English who wish to update their English language, develop their confidence in using the language, and expand their vocabulary and range of expression
*    Participants should have a minimum language level corresponding to B2 in the Common European Framework

Course aims

*    To “brush up” and improve your competence and confidence in English
*    To update your methodology, management and practical teaching techniques and skills
*    To examine and reflect on your own approaches and attitudes to teaching and learning
*    To become more aware of what you and others do in the classroom
*    To discuss and share ideas, problems, methods and techniques with peers from other parts of the world

Course programme

Preparation
All participants are required to fill in a Pre-Course questionnaire. It is very important that this is returned at the earliest opportunity as the course is pre-planned based on this. The course content is outlined and discussed on the first afternoon, and is then adapted as appropriate.

Objectives
Language enrichment
The aim of the morning sessions is to develop your language skills so that you will feel more confident teaching in English. The sessions aim to develop your language skills with a particular focus on speaking and listening, extend your vocabulary, grammatical and functional knowledge, and also to improve your knowledge of pronunciation.

Teaching techniques
In the afternoon sessions, participants will experience a variety of teaching techniques, materials, devices and procedures designed to help students acquire language. There is a focus on current methodologies and practical teaching skills that participants will evaluate for effectiveness and also discuss ways of adapting these to fit in with different teaching contexts.

Description of training content

17.5 hours per week of language enrichment (09:00 – 13:00)

*    5 hours per week of Spoken Performance workshops (09:00 – 10:00)
*    12.5 hours per week of skills lessons (10:15 – 11:15 / 11:30 – 13:00)

Spoken Performance Workshop
Students are set tasks that challenge them to develop their speaking skills across a range of different everyday situations and experiment with their newly acquired language.

Skills lessons
A structured curriculum which integrates grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation with the four main skills area of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

10 hours of Teachers Methodology (14:00 – 16:15)

The course is held at our main school which stands proudly on the historic Royal Mile. The school is housed in a magnificent 1820’s building and inside it has been transformed into a bright, well-equipped and modern English language school.

This course offers 20 hours of teaching methodology (09:00 – 13:30) in a closed group.

The course is held at our main school which stands proudly on the historic Royal Mile. The school is housed in a magnificent 1820’s building and inside it has been transformed into a bright, well-equipped and modern English language school.

During the summer, a variety of social and cultural activities are available to participants every day and every evening, as well as a range of one and two-day excursions on the weekends.

Teacher Training 2012: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Who is the course suitable for?

*    Non-native teachers who teach their curriculum subject(s) in English to learners aged 11 upwards.
*    Participants should have a minimum language level corresponding to B1 in the Common European Framework.

Course aims

*    To establish how CLIL methodology compares to current teaching methodology.
*    To become aware of the features of CLIL and how this can be used in the classroom.
*    To identify target language terminology required to teach subjects in English.
*    To give participants the opportunity to apply the CLIL methodology to their own teaching situation by discussing and creating tasks with other teachers of different subjects.

Objectives
Participants will confirm their understanding of CLIL through discussion and input, thereby identifying how their teaching methods will need to be adapted. The course will look at what English language the teacher will need, how to identify key vocabulary items, how to lesson plan and creating practical tasks that can be used across a number of different class subjects. During the course participants will experience CLIL from a learners’ point of view; they will also share ideas related to current CLIL methodology and create tasks with a view to receiving feedback on their effectiveness from their peers.

Outcomes
In learning about the theoretical and practical aspects of CLIL and by sharing teaching knowledge and expertise, participants will have a wider understanding of teaching subjects through English along with a number of practical ideas to use as a confident and knowledgeable CLIL teacher.

Summer Courses:

- Homestay accommodation is offered on a half-board basis with the option of both standard and en-suite
rooms.
- Self-catered apartments are available and are shared between three and five students from the school.
- Single rooms are available in residential accommodation on a half-board basis.
