Broadstairs

Broadstairs is a beautiful coastal town, with wonderful beaches, on the famous South Coast of England. Unlike many large cities, it's a friendly place with excellent residential areas very close to the College. There are many restaurants, pubs and coffee bars where you can meet friends. Close by there are also shopping centres, cinemas, theatres, music venues, bowling alleys, sports centres, markets and an amusement park. The old part of Broadstairs still retains the beauty of a picturesque fishing village. During the 19th century Broadstairs became popular with members of the royal family and famous artists and writers. Charles Dickens wrote much of his work here and called it his "beloved Broadstairs". The town remains popular with visitors today.

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
All courses which include Language Development offer an opportunity for you to update your language in the mornings (15 hours
per week) followed by your chosen special interest area (see below) in the afternoon classes (6 hours per week). Classes are small
(normally maximum 12, but may occasionally rise to 15) and are suitable for participants at level CEFR B2 and above.
For the majority of our International Teachers Courses the mornings are language-intensive and are designed to help you improve
your fluency and command of English in stimulating ways. We use a continuously updated range of resources and materials to
provide you with the ideal opportunity to enrich your language and to experience current approaches to exploiting authentic texts,
DVD, off-air recordings, the internet and communication technology in the classroom.

CREATIVE TEACHING (COURSES ITC1A, ITC2A, ITC3AE, ITC4A, ITC5A, ITC6A)

What does it mean to be a creative teacher? We will look at ways of working creatively with texts, pronunciation, vocabulary,
grammar and areas such as storytelling, music, poetry, drama and movement.
This course will be practical with the focus on learning through enjoyment and creativity. Participants will be encouraged to
experience ideas and adapt them to the needs and interests of their own learners. Ideas and materials covered will be of special
interest to teachers of secondary and adult students.

Help your students get the most out of studying curriculum subjects through the medium of English. This option is aimed at
secondary school teachers who teach or intend to teach their subject (other than English - for example History, Geography etc.)
through the medium of English.
We will focus on: classroom language, strategies for integrating content and language and developing communicative competence,
working with written, audio and visual text, developing subject-specific language and supporting the students in the learning
process. There will be opportunities for teachers to participate in micro-teaching with feedback in their own subject.

Explore ways of working with literature in English language
teaching and learning. Course participants will have the
opportunity to experience and explore ways of exploiting
texts, plots, characters, stories and plays ranging from
Shakespeare to Dickens and on to contemporary works
such as Harry Potter. Ideas and materials covered will be of
special interest to teachers of secondary and adult students

Update your knowledge of Britain today – popular culture,
people in the news, politics, royalty, education, humour,
housing etc – and work with ideas and materials
(questionnaires, DVD/video, cartoons, current articles from
the media and the Internet) that you can adapt for
classroom use.
Develop your language and your teaching skills
in an enjoyable and stimulating atmosphere

This option is directly related to your own teaching
situation and needs. Bring with you your course book and
one or two teaching issues you would like to work on. With
this option, you will have the opportunity to explain your
setting and the main areas that concern you in your
teaching at the moment. You will exchange practical
advice and new ideas with your fellow participants,
co-ordinated by an experienced tutor and in a
collaborative atmosphere.

This course is designed to introduce secondary school language teachers to a range of new technologies which can be used to
enhance the learning experience in the classroom and beyond. Social networking, blogs, forums, podcasts, webquests and interactive
whiteboards can all be used to add variety, enhance interest and provide an added relevance to modern language learners.

This course is designed for native and non-native teacher trainers, educators, mentors, course directors – in fact, anyone who has, or will have, responsibility for helping and supervising fellow professionals in ELT. We will focus on: mentoring and supervising, helping

teachers plan, observation, discussion and feedback, listening and handling conflict, working with different styles, running
workshops and refresher courses, trainer support materials, participant case studies, and language development for personal and
professional purposes. The exact content will depend on the needs of the group.

The keys to success when teaching English to young learners are confidence in your own ability to use English and an awareness of
how to identify and exploit the everyday language learning possibilities for the learners.
Are you sometimes uncertain about the best way to say something in English? Are you sure about the classroom language you use?
Are you confident that you and the children in your classes are benefitting from all the everyday language learning opportunities?
These are all areas we will cover on this course. You can make a real difference to the quality of your English and especially to your
level of confidence - even in a short period of 2 weeks.
You will be in a group with other teachers of young learners, and will concentrate on the areas of language most important in the
context of teaching, including the language of the classroom. You will experience a variety of approaches and techniques and will be
actively involved in developing both your language skills and your awareness of approaches and activities, to help the learners
develop their language. We aim to make the course an enjoyable and stimulating experience.

Other topics will be discussed according to group needs and interests.

The College reserves the right to cancel or amend courses.
